A review of Apps World North America 2014

We’ve just returned back to base after a fun week in San Francisco attending Apps World North America. First off, thanks to all those of you who came by the stand to say hello, it was great to meet you. It’s always a great pleasure to be at these events and learn about the constantly shifting requirements and demands out there in this business of ours. Of course, on a personal note I love meeting our customers and experiencing first hand the enthusiasm and esteem in which they hold our products, it really does give our whole team a great sense of achievement and pride.





These conferences, in addition to being great places to showcase our products, are a terrific way to take the temperature of a wide section of the market. For me there were a couple of key developments even compared to last year’s show. Firstly, it would appear that the HTML5 bubble has well and truly burst. Where a year or two ago people were proclaiming the death of native apps and claiming HTML5 as the all-conquering winner in the mobile space, this year it was clear people have retreated from that position very significantly. Sure, HTML5 isn’t going away, and neither should it. It’s a great choice in many situations, but what I heard time and again from all corners of the market was that if you care about great UX, native is the only choice. HTML5 is wonderful in all manner of ways, but it just doesn’t deliver the same experience and so where experience counts you must use native. There were outliers, but I don’t think I’m misrepresenting it when I say that the large majority of people I spoke to held that view – that was quite different not so long ago. Even some HTML5 vendors who came to our stand held the very same opinion and that says a lot. Of course, the point at which great UX is demanded is now the big debate.

The other shift I noticed was a definite sense of gaining momentum in terms of mobile adoption in the enterprise. Where previously organisations were still grappling with how and when to adopt a mobile strategy, now it seems many have taken the first steps and in quite a few cases mobile is now quite central to future plans. Clearly it was only a matter of time before this would happen but it’s great to see these mobile plans taking flight so quickly. We are operating a time and space in which technology is moving and evolving faster than ever before and the opportunity to be at the forefront of that shift is really exciting and I very much look forward to seeing what the rest of this year will bring and what changes we will see at next year’s show!
